Greg Rutherford's Final Season Derailed by AppendicitisPublished by
Greg Rutherford Pulls Out of British Championships with AppendicitisBy Adam Kopet Greg Rutherford's final season is not going as he would have liked. The long jumper from Great Britain announced he would retire at the end of the summer earlier this month. His goal was to compete at the London and Birmingham Diamond League meetings and represent Great Britain one last time at the European Outdoor Championships. However, Rutherford's season has been derailed by a case of appendicitis, according to EuroSport. He has withdrawn from the British Championships, the selection meet for the European Outdoor Championships in August. It is possible for Rutherford to still compete at the European Outdoor Championships. The British qualification system does allow for discretionary selection, but he would need to be able to show fitness, something he is running out of time to do. His illness might also put his ability to compete at the London Diamond League meeting in jeopardy. However, at this time Rutherford plans to compete in London. He has just over three weeks to get squared away.
